Wegovy® & Mounjaro® Introduction
Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are popular weight loss drugs that can help patients achieve their weight loss goals. There are some differences between these drugs in terms of their active ingredients.
Wegovy® uses semaglutide as its active ingredient. This is the same ingredient found in Ozempic. Wegovy® is available on the NHS, however, many patients choose to access this drug via a private clinic as it can be a more convenient option.
Mounjaro® uses tirzepatide as its active ingredient. It works in the same way as Wegovy® and Ozempic by inhibiting receptors in our brains, so patients think they are full, and therefore reduce the amount that they eat.

If you are, you will be invited into the clinic where we will check your weight and measurements and ask you some consultation questions about your lifestyle.
As part of treatment we offer nutrition and lifestyle advice and we expect patients to be committed to making healthy changes to their habits so they can get the best results from these treatments.
Patients who are prescribed Wegovy® or Mounjaro® at The Grove Skin & Laser Clinic are invited into the clinic regularly so that we can check your progress and help you with any concerns or problems you may have.
Why go private for Weight Loss Treatment?
Wegovy® is available on the NHS, but this doesn’t stop patients from wanting to access weight loss injections through a private clinic.
Although accessing Wegovy® on the NHS is possible, there are often long waiting lists and barriers that can make it difficult to be able to get this drug. Many patients will decide to go private for this medication as it can make the process quicker and more efficient, with less waiting around and a direct line to a healthcare professional who can offer the advice that you may need.

FAQ'S
All patients are different and will respond differently to medications, however, as a rule of thumb, we see patients on Wegovy® and Mounjaro® losing approximately 2% of their body weight over a 4 week period of using the injections. This would equate to someone who is 200 pounds losing 5 pounds in the first month. Individual results will vary and can be impacted by diet and exercise.
Your BMI will be one of the indicators we use to see if you are suitable for Wegovy® or Mounjaro®. BMI or body mass index is a calculation that uses your height, weight and age to establish whether you have a healthy weight. A healthy weight will sit between 18.5 and 24.9 for most people. If your BMI is 30 or greater, or if you have weight related conditions, you may be suitable for weight loss injections.
Unfortunately Mounjaro® is not available on the NHS. The only weight loss injections you can access on the NHS is Wegovy®. If you would like to use Mounjaro® you will need to get a prescription from a clinic like The Grove Skin & Laser Clinic in Swansea.
We wouldn’t recommend drinking alcohol while using Wegovey® or Mounjaro®. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects such as nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting and reduce the effectiveness of weight loss injection drugs. Moderate alcohol consumption may be allowed for some patients, but it is important to check with a medically qualified healthcare first.
Some patients do gain weight when they come off Wegovy® or Mounjaro®, that is why we prescribe these weight loss injections alongside nutritional and lifestyle planning. Patients who eat healthily and exercise while on a weight loss programme are a lot more likely to keep the weight off when they come to the end of their treatment plan.
